Backup Services
Perhaps the most fundamental of all IT services is the need for a reliable backup on a regular basis.
As data size has grown and user expectations have increased, the challenge of keeping up with backup has become more frustrating for IT managers.
What makes for a “good” backup? First is confidence that everything important (is there anything that’s not important?) is being backed up. Second, and perhaps ultimately more important, is confidence that you can restore from the backup. Too many IT managers have faced the embarrassing, or even job-limiting situation, of loading a backup tape only to discover it’s no longer readable. A backup is no good if the data can’t be restored. A good backup is also frequent so recently changed or lost data can be restored. For a backup to be good, it also must have little or no impact on any users. If you have to stop production to do a backup, that’s important time that’s lost forever.
There was a time when backup was considered a last-resort option to restore data when a server crashed or after a disaster. In recent years, backup and restore has become more important for dealing with individual files or databases where user error is the issue more than hardware or software error.
Backup is still at the core of dealing with a crisis. Backup is now the key of any disaster recovery (DR) plan – if something “really bad” happens at your data center – fire, flood, theft, or any of those other undesirable things, where is your data and how do you rebuild? A disaster recovery plan builds on a good backup plan.
Backup is also a key component in a business continuity (BC) plan. For businesses that depend on web sales, for instance, even a brief outage can represent significant lost sales. Most businesses need a way to continue operating immediately after, or more often, during, a disaster situation, and that means having computers and data that can take over for your primary systems. For real business continuity, the backup data must be as up-to-date with the live data as possible.
InterDev strongly advocates the use of disk-based backup, with redundancy to off-site locations. This is the clear future direction of backup, DR, and BC, and for any business starting today, this is the only way to go. We understand that many organizations have large investments in tape-based backup systems and through our managed services, we’ll help you continue to make the best use of those systems now and into the future. Regardless of the current state of your backup technology, we can help you have peace of mind that your data is secure and recoverable.
